Professional Certificate in Strategic Refugee and Forced Migration Policy
6th - 10th November 2017, London, UK

Course Overview

Under the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN ‘recognises that international migration is a multi-dimensional reality of major relevance for the development of countries of origin, transit and destination', and that this urgently requires coherent and comprehensive responses. A core part of the Post-2015 Development Agenda sets out to ensure safe, orderly and regular migration that is in full respect of human rights. Integral to this, the UN recognises, is that those communities hosting refugees are also strengthened. For this crisis to be combatted, governments and humanitarian actors must put into place a coherent, humane and well-informed policy strategy that minimises human and economic costs.

This programme will provide those involved in the relevant policy-making fields with coherent and comprehensive responses to current refugee movements, and a clear understanding of the principles, practices, processes and challenges in establishing and implementing well-considered policy initiatives.

Interactive learning will support participants’ understanding of key themes, such as the relationship between national and international policy, the state's role in aiding and supporting refugees, and current refugee movements. By applying strategic planning tools and examining best practice case studies, participants will leave with a highly comprehensive understanding of the global context and the costs and benefits of different policies - fully equipped to formulate and implement sustainable initiatives for refugees and forced migrants.

Topics Include

  • International bodies’ involvement in refugee policy
  • Responsibility-sharing for refugees and international law
  • Recording numbers and storing data on incoming refugees
  • Safeguarding migrant children and young people
  • Analysing durable solutions to refugee policy
